Nursing, Board of

Purpose

To regulate registered nurses, practical nurses, and advanced registered nurses in DC, including nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists, and nurse practitioners; advise the Mayor. Evaluate qualifications and administer exams; recommend standards and procedures; issue licenses; receive and review complaints; request investigations; conduct hearings; issue subpoenas; examine witnesses and administer oaths; annual report. Members must file personal financial disclosure statements. Eleven DC residents, including a Chair, appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the Council; seven licensed RNs (of whom one shall be certified in each of the following: nurse-midwifery, nurse-anesthetists, and certified nurse practitioner), two LPNs and two consumers. Professional members must have been engaged in practice for at least 3 years preceding appointment. The consumer members must be at least 18 years old, not be health professionals or in training to become one and may have household member who is involved in providing health care.
